MEET RACHEL
With over 25 years of dedicated experience as an Organizer, Housing, and Homelessness Advocate, I have been a driving force in championing the rights and well-being of individuals within the realm of affordable housing. My journey began in 1995 when, as an Americorp VISTA Volunteer for Legal Service Aid of Broward County, Florida, I initiated the organization of Resident Councils, laying the foundation for my lifelong commitment to community empowerment.
Early Advocacy Initiatives:
In 1995, I launched the Independent Housing Campaign titled "Saving Our Homes and Taking Back Our Communities Tour," targeting potentially troubled low-income housing. The campaign aimed to educate tenants about their rights and responsibilities, fostering awareness and empowerment within vulnerable communities.
Nonprofit Leadership: As the Co-Founder of Helping Others Make Everything Right (HOMER), a nonprofit organization, I continued my mission to make a positive impact on housing issues. The organization strives to create tangible change, providing support and resources to those in need.
Faces of HUD Housing:
As the Founder of Faces of HUD Housing on Facebook, I created a platform for residents to share experiences, knowledge, and support. This online community serves as a hub for information exchange and solidarity among those navigating the challenges of HUD housing.
Weekly Advocacy and Training: Every Monday night at 8 pm EST, I conduct the "Help Is Help You Housing Advocacy/Tenants Rights Training." This virtual session serves as a vital resource for individuals seeking to understand their rights and navigate the complex landscape of housing regulations.
National Recognition:
In a significant milestone, on November 14, 2023, the National Low Income Housing Coalition recognized my unwavering commitment by naming me a Top Organizer/Housing Advocate in the country. This recognition led to a special invitation to the White House to speak on crucial topics such as Affordable Housing, Right to Organize in Public Housing, Project-Based Section 8 Housing, and Tenant Protection Laws, Practices & Processes.
Awards and Legacy:
Throughout my tenure as the Lead Organizer of the National Alliance of HUD Tenants (1995-2016), I garnered numerous awards, reflecting the impactful work accomplished in advancing tenant rights and affordable housing initiatives. Notably, I was interviewed by NPR's Kojo Show for my efforts in organizing the Museum Square Tenants Rally, a pivotal moment in preserving affordable housing under TOPA laws, involving predominantly Vietnamese and African American tenants.
My journey continues to be driven by a passion for creating positive change, empowering communities, and ensuring everyone has access to safe and affordable housing. Through advocacy, education, and community engagement, I strive to make a lasting impact on the lives of those in need.
I'm always looking for new and exciting opportunities. Let's connect.
